I-D Magazine: Ancient Technology is Always Superior

If you follow me on twitter, you have likely noticed me talking too much about my magazine project again. This is because I am really hoping to get this magazine printed soon. I am aiming to have it completed around the first of July. Ideally, I will be able to start distributing copies at the beginning of July.

----
EDIT: This just in, Cover Preview!

----

As a teaser, here are some of the stuff that will likely make it into the finished product: Drill Dozer, Kirby Canvas Curse, 3D Mario Retrospective, Touhou, Roguelikes, Bangai-O, StellaVanity, Rozen Diadem, Bonk's Adventure, Magical Chase, and Anamanaguchi concert report. Actual magazine content subject to change, but all the above is pretty certain. For a first issue, I am optimistic that people will enjoy our article lineup.

If you are writing something for the magazine and I know about it, just keep at it. I don't want to rush anybody, but I very much want to be able to take some issues with me to give away at Otakon. If you want to write something and are confident that you can contribute something in a very timely manner- please contact me! I need to know what all is going on.

The magazine is obviously a budget project and my means for distribution are limited. Play Again Classic Video Games, a local retro gaming store, has offered carry the product with all the money going back to me. I will also be giving away copies at Otakon as well as mailing out issues to certain people I know that I believe would be interested. How much I can give away depends entirely on printing costs. I will be making a very minimal amount off of this magazine. I will charge only around the printing price, unless I need to charge extra to cover an additional cost. This magazine is written by a small group of un-payed contributors, so it wouldn't be right for me to get rich off of this. If you run a store or have some other way of selling this product, I would be happy to give you the files and let you print them out yourself to sell- and keep all of what you make! I just want to get this into the hands of readers.

With this limited means of selling, there will later be a Kindle release. The print version will serve as a "special edition", since I just really love physical copies. A couple months ofter the printed edition is released, the Kindle version will launch. With no printing costs, it will be even cheaper. The proceeds will help cover mailing costs and other unexpected financial surprises. None of it will be for me to spend on ice cream and steak.

I hope at least a few people out there are looking forward to the magazine. I would love to hear any thoughts or suggestions in the comments.

I like writing things? Do you need anyone to talk about cartoons in your magazine?

I'm not sure why that first sentence was a question. I'm typing one-handed while donating plasma right now. That's a good excuse, maybe.

Well I am trying to keep it lmited to video games, but cartoons based off of video games is completely aceptable.

pardno my tyopes. I'm typing one-handed while loading the warhead onto my mecha. That’s a good excuse, maybe.

Hmmmmm. I'm not as good with video games. Unless you want me to write about nothing but Final Fantasy IX and Super Mario RPG. And possibly a weekly column on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Any one of those would be a welcome addition, especially Yoshi's Island. [though some serious time-space management would be required for a weekly column on YI to appear in a non-weekly magazine]

PS: Yoshi's Island ties with Majora's Mask for my favourite game ever.

I'm really not sure what to say about any of them. A review seems pretty pointless considering how old they are. But if you ever have any other ideas that relate to those games, I'm your man.

Here are some suggestions from lwelyk:

"How FFIX was a return to form, the Squareness of SMRPG, the creative enemy/boss design of YI"

If I come up with anything I'll let you know.

This looks really good so far. The cover alone has a great retro-feel.

(by the way, I got here by way of Rackeyboy's forum :D)

Thanks, Adarg! I appreciate the feedback.

I made the cover black and white to save on price, and was bummed at first. Once I start designing it though- I really like it this way.

Love the cover. Will pay extra to get physical copy sent to uk. Now to finish my articles, haha

Considering I am not paying you for writing, you will be getting one for free.
