Episode 1 - Retro

Here we go, first episode of the gaming podcast, >Attack Magic Item Flee. This week lwelyk, Baka, Patz, and Ecks showed up to talk about retro games, and which ones are our favorites. My audio continues to skip, a problem that will be fixed by next episode assuming NewEgg gets my RAM to me in time. The audio at the beginning is especially bad, but it's decent after that. Show notes after the jump.

The ff3 remake was worth it, since it hadn''t been in the US before.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterauhin

An remake isn't worth MORE than a brand new game. : /

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlwelyk

Ye,s but it was brand new to the country, so it was justified.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterauhin

No...

A brand new game is brand new to the country, so an old game brand new to the country doesn't get to charge an extra $5. It should be less or at most equal. : /

Twilight is a million times better than this super lame podcast.

It does have a theme of Edward being Bella's protector but if you actually did read the books, Lwelyk, you would know that Bella's character has so much love for Edward that she always takes things out of proportion. She's willing to die for him in Twilight and she thinks he leaves her because he doesn't like her anymore in New Moon. She says she isn't good enough for him in Breaking Dawn because that's part of her personality, she's humble.

But FF3 totally revised their graphics, edited the disproportionate job system, added new music, bosses and WiFi functions, and was probably one of the best DS rpgs for the system at that time. Have you actually played it?

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterauhin

Our podcast must be like 1 trillionth of a percentile positive then, because Twilight is horrendous. We HAVE read the books, and even we can see that it is a ploddingly written desecration of vampire lore, and is written like a 13 year-old's fanfiction as she's becoming interested in boys. She loves someone, so she blows things out of proportion, funny, that's usually symptoms of an unhealthy obsession and borderline insanity. The girl is a total mary-sue and yet still manages to have dependency issues (Which I'll assume inherited from her Father.) I'm glad you commented on that. Because it shows when we tear apart Twilight, even though our audience may hate us, we'll have one.

No woman should be willing to die for a vampire jerk. That simply demonstrates to me that she needs some counseling. Seriously, is isn't healthy to want to die for anyone like that. It isn't romantic, it's unrealistic. In all honesty it's actually quite selfish, you're dying in their stead. Think about this. If they had died, you would be feeling all the grief, but instead you force them to live and suffer through that grief in your place. How selfish of Bella.

Bella is portraying a negative female archetype and is a horrible role model for young girls. Edward is a complete arse and his idea of "Romance" is using 14th century pick-up lines. Girls should be smarter than this and I really hope they are outside of their fandom for this book.

Don't get me started on the way the book is written. Seriously, she describes unnecessary things for lengthy paragraphs, while skimping over the essentials.

I could go on, but then we wouldn't have a podcast on the book. Have a nice day. :D

On FF3, I will agree that it is enough of a remake for me to consider it worth full price, however in my eyes, no game is worth the Square tax. Regular DS price? Yes.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEcks

I don't hate you guys; I'm just an avid Twilight fan and I feel obligated to defend it.

The books are about love, that's what draws people in. The thing is, you're not a girl. It's written primarily for a girl audience; that's probably why you can't connect with it. When I read the books, and when the millions of other girls read the books as well, we felt what Bella was feelng and her being willing to die for Edward just shows how much she cared about him. Edward is willing to die for Bella as well, he's just as obsessive as her. He isn't a vampire jerk; he cares for her and takes great risks for her, even willing to kill himself when he thinks she has committed suicide.

It's fiction. It's not supposed to be realistic. Bella was never meant to be a role model, she is every girl already. That's why so many girls love the books so much, they can connect with Bella. She is a clumsy yet ordinary girl, there is nothing really special about her but then she meets the Cullens and her life completely changes. A regular girl falling in love with Edward is pretty much every girl's dream. They love the idea of falling in love and finding something that could last forever. This brings me back to my first point, those ideals are what girls want, not guys.

I don't know what you mean about her writing. I didn't think it was fan fiction at all. Yeah, it's about vampires, but its not like super geeky or anything. I mean, I've read parts of some fan fictions and they're usually really boring or geeky. But Twilight full of emotion and really keeps you turning the pages. I really don't know what you mean by "describes unnecessary things" and "skimping over the essentials", sounds like stuff you're just making up.

Please, before this starts out to be like every other flame war, realize that there are a lot more people who can use big words too. Just drop it please.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

First, let me give you credit for being the most rational Twilight fan I've met yet. That's saying a LOT.

First off, I can't argue the female part, as it would only be speculation as I am a male. I may be a hopeless romantic, and I enjoy my own guilty romantic pleasures, however I've found that the modern perception of dying for one another, or killing yourself together to be kind of sickening and sadistic rather than romantic.

I'm not trying to change peoples perception of the book, because it's ultimately opinion, and that isn't something that can usually be changed. I'm willing to accept that people like the book, but what I want is the people who go out and call this book "A masterpiece" or "Better than Tolkien(whom I'm actually not a fan of)." to understand that their is legitimate reason to dislike the book.

As far as fanfiction writing, I'm reminded of some of the things I've read online with this story. The descriptions of unnecessary comments I'm referring to are incidents where she describes the layout of a room with vivid detail that really holds no bearing. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against describing the setting, but it often seemed cluttered. The skimping over essentials part I refer to when she refers to Edward as simply being Perfect. This bothered me, I mean some may find that romantic, but I personally find it a bit lazy. I prefer to have a description of a person and establish whether this person is ideal, amazing or "Perfect" myself. If it is evident they are perfect, it isn't really necessary to state such a fact.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEcks

Who said this was a flame war?
I'm not mad or anything.
I just want justice for Twilight.

And I'm not just using "big" words for the sake of it, they happen to fall from my fingers naturally.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGalactic_Unicorn

Meh, I don't get Alex's problem. I totally know what he means, but I would rather good writing than bad writing.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBakaTanuki

Alex this isn't even close to a flame war o.o

Her reply was written kindly and inquisitively, and as such I tried to do the same. I'm not looking for a fight, and I don't think she is. All is good.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEcks

Well, that's your opinion on them saying they would die for each other. It didn't really bother me and obviously not a lot of other people, but whatever.

I never said it was a masterpeice.
I think it's a good book that will probably be well-known in the future, but I don't think it is masterfully written by any means. I think Stephenie Meyer does a great job of capturing a girl's emotions; I know I'm able to connect a lot with Bella's feelings, the thing, as I said earlier, that makes them so popular is because girls can connect with her.

But you're right, it is opinion and I probably won't be able to change yours no matter what I say.

So have you really read all the books?
Have you seen the movie?

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGalactic_Unicorn

So far I've read the first book and I plan to finish the rest soon. I've read synopsis of the other three and I plan to watch the movie at some point.

I apologize also, I never meant to accuse you of calling it a masterpiece, I'm just speaking in generalities.

Collectively we plan on reading all the books, and I think one among our ranks already has hence why I said "We've read all the books."

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEcks

I actually kind of discourage guys from reading the books because I know they probably won't understand them. In only one or two cases have I met a guy who liked the books, and they're usually the effeminate ones. Although the second book, New Moon, is my absolute favorite in the series, mostly because of Jacob and the werewolf pack. I'm actually Team Jacob (if you know what that means).

Maybe if you wanted to give Stephenie Meyer (the author) another chance, you could read The Host. It's her others series that she just started after Twilight. The Host is the only book out in the series so far but I actually think it is far better than the Twilight Saga; I think it deserves a lot more attention than Twilight, but that probably won't happen unless they make a movie of it or something.

I loved the Twilight movie but there were a lot of Twilight book fans that didn't like it, so you'll have to decide that for yourself.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGalactic_Unicorn

To chime in on the Twilight issue. I really disliked Stephenie Meyer's writing, and the romance didn't really feel like one. There didn't seem to be much reason to it. I liked a lot of the basic concepts: veggie vampires, Edward having to hold back his bloodlust, the evil vampires. It just wasn't executed very well. If Stephenie Meyer had a friend or editor work with her early on she could have had a good book. As it is, it's pretty cheesy, poorly written, and failed in execution.

I'm fine with people liking it, I'm just disappointed books like this are the ones that get huge rather than some of the more well-written ones. I really loathed it in the end, but that's my opinion and you have yours.

Also this is the most rational Twilight arguement I've ever seen. I misjudged you Unicorn. I suppose the PM you randomly sent me saying "YOU'RE GAY" kind of colored my initial opinion of you. XD

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlwelyk

Oh and @ auhin:

Yeah, they added wifi and stuff, but I could get a NEW game with that for LESS. It shouldn't cost more for a remake than for a brand-new game.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlwelyk

Oh yeah! I completely forgot about that pm.
Well, I thought it was pretty funny when I sent it.

And I agree, I am a pretty rational Twilight fan.
:]

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGalactic_Unicorn

"rational Twilight fan."

That's an oxymoron = P

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterlwelyk

Tell me about it.

It's pretty much either you LOVE the books or you really really don't like them. No inbetween.

February 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterGalactic_Unicorn

I'm just going to be quiet and work on my game quietly for the next millenium.
